Demystifying the Color Dilemma

in Color

Coco Chanel once said, "An interior is the natural projection of the soul." If this is the case then you should seriously give a lot of thought in choosing the colors in your home. Even if you're not an artist, treat your walls as your canvas and the anchor as to how all of your home decor accessories and functional items would play.

Here are a few tips on how to make the choice:

1. Familiarize yourself with the color wheel. There is so much to learn about color and to have cohesiveness, you should stick with either of these three schemes:

Monochromatic Color Scheme: Using variations in lightness and saturation of a single color. This scheme exudes elegance.

Analogous Color Scheme: Using colors that are adjacent to each other in the color wheel. This gives a home more depth and drama but still staying within the minimalist look.

Complementary Color Scheme: Using colors that are opposites in the color wheel. Use this scheme for a bolder, livelier feel.

2. Get in touch with your emotions.

Colors evoke a feeling and a mood. Want to be more cheery? Bright yellows maybe your pick. Want your space to have a relaxing effect? Then calming blues are for you. Romantic maybe? How about reds and pinks?

3. Do not play favorites.

Your favorite color may not be your best choice. Sure, it may look good in a clothing ensemble, a tablescape or even a gift wrap. But in your living room? Maybe not.

4. Vacation Ready.

Want to relive your amazing trip to Tuscany? Then antique yellows are a good choice. Dreaming of a Caribbean getaway? Replay the bright colors this place evokes in your home.

5. Neutral = Exciting

You may not be the adventurous kind and would like to stay with neutral colors. No problem! With a wide array of neutral paint colors, you can still make it exciting with different finishes and techniques such as color washing or ragging.

I hope these tips will help you to finally choose the perfect color for your space. Good luck!
